My new training partner is ace, but stronger than me! Oh dear, it’s brought out the jealousy monsters a bit. That said, she is about 10 years younger, 6” taller and maybe 10kg heavier than me. Plus she used to play rugby. So, it’s not really surprising she’s strong 🙂

Still, should be a good challenge for me…

Tonight I’m training with one of this term’s newbies at the gym.

We had 3 new ladies last week, and one of them is hella strong already so my coach asked her if she’d like to train with me instead of the other 2 new ladies (who aren’t at her level yet). I’m quite excited at the prospect of having someone to train with!

I just want my body to reflect my work ethic

that feel though : (
basically the only reason I would like to lean out is because i feel that despite all the time, sweat, and work i put into the gym, my body is no reflection of the strength gains and progress i have made in the gym. Vain or not, i want my body to reflect that hard work and commitment. and i will have that.

I feel torn on this myself.

On the one hand, I don’t look like someone who lifts heavy 3-4 times a week. On the other hand, I’m proud to be a larger person, and I very much identify with the fat acceptance movement.

In fact I’d rather be part of the FA movement than any sort of fitness community, as I find FA just that much more accepting. FA/SA communities are awesome and cool, and I want to be part of that.

Realised I’ve been a bit slack with updating here!

My third Olympic weightlifting lesson. Again, I can’t remember exactly what we did, but it was more snatch drills & some clean & jerks. I can now snatch 22kg & C&J 32kg – not great, but then I’ve only been doing it 3 weeks!

I got quite dispirited during the class as I know I’m strong, but I’m really struggling to nail the technique. There’s another woman in the class who is far stronger & more supple than me; but I shouldn’t compare myself to her as she’s 1) younger; 2) a yoga instructor and 3) has been learning Olympic WL outside the class too. But it’s hard, I can’t help comparing!

Spiders, red band: 3 sets of 30s

My Twitter (@laurabygaslight if you wanna follow) is full of mostly fitness people, fat/fatshion people and foodies.

Occasionally one of the fitness people will post something disparaging about fat people. Today it was something along the lines of “I’m not a woman hater, but sometimes you have to stand next to the fat girl to make your day go better”. I won’t quote it verbatim because it doesn’t deserve taking up my time to go find it again in my timeline.

The more I see posts like that, the more I want to post a picture of my (fat) self in a bikini and say hey, guess what, this fit person you follow – and allegedly whose fitness journey you’re interested in – is fat too. Would you say that kind of thing directly to me?

£5 says probably not. Fatphobia really is borne of self-hatred and cowardice.

hi guys! this is a comic i made for a final in my comics in literature class. we had to do a research paper on a topic we’d discussed in class and then accompany it with a comic with a relevant subject. my paper was about hyper-sexualization of women in comic books, but i decided to broaden it out here as well as personalize it and make myself the subject and discuss something i’ve been subjected to in the convention circuit and on the internet as well as thousands of other women, as well as give a cue to thought about how the comic book industry as well as the video game industry and even just media in general (all of which are male dominated) push such ridiculous pressures onto girls and women.

also, it feels kind of silly to have to add this since i hope it’s obvious, but i am very aware that there are men that don’t subscribe to this attitude, and am incredibly grateful that these issues are brought to light to people other than the ones that are subjected to it.

anyway haha i have literally been staring at this for 9 hours i don’t even know which direction is up anymore. thanks for reading!!!

This is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
