Monthly Archives: June 2013

OK, after some food and a couple of hours of watching TV, I’m feeling less whingy.

Just got to get through this week, and then I’ll have a week of rest. Must keep my eye on that!

Hitting the wall

I think I hit the wall, physically, today. Yesterday I went straight from the gym to my new house, to do DIY. I helped my boyfriend & a friend put in the bath, and I scraped the ancient vinyl from where it had been glued to the floorboards…

… apparently this is one of the hardest renovation jobs around; coupled with my carpal tunnel in my left hand, it was agony. This morning I got up & did more of it, a bit more plumbing and a fair amount of tidying.

Then my boyfriend & I drove to my house to load boxes (packed on Friday night) into his van.

So, to recap: work, 100%+ deadlifts & 70% squats on Thursday; work, conditioning class & packing boxes on Friday; speed day & DIY on Saturday; DIY & loading boxes on Sunday.

After loading the boxes I basically just….stopped. My body stopped responding and I had to have a nap. EVERYTHING hurts. I know I sound like I’m whinging, but to be honest, I feel every minute of my 36 years right now. My back aches from deadlifts, my chest aches from scraping vinyl, my arms ache from carrying, my wrist & hand are super-sore from carpal tunnel. I feel broken.

After my nap I got up & needed to vacuum, do laundry and wash dishes.

Tomorrow I have to test my squat 1RM (after work). I’m dreading it 😦

Right now I feel like I’m just doing too much (working out at 2 gyms 5 days a week, preparing a house for selling, preparing another derelict house for living in, working full time…) but of course I can’t give up any of it. Nor would I want to!

Ah, you have no idea how jealous I am of you kids lifting while at college! Lifting is my life, too; but my life also involves a FT job and preparing a beautiful old house ready for living in with my wonderful boyfriend (who I don’t currently live with – so excited about living with him).

I. Am. Knackered.

Speed day at Bethnal Green

Dumbbell cleans: 12.5kg, 5 reps x 3

Seated dumbbell shoulder press: 10.5kg, 5 reps x 2; 12.5kg, 3 reps; 12.5kg, 2 reps x 2

Upright row: 20kg, 5 reps; 22.5kg, 5 reps x 4

Once more, these are terribly painful due to my carpal tunnel, sigh

Dimel deadlifts: 40kg, 20 reps x 2

Dumbbell shrugs: 20kg, 5 reps x 2; 22.5kg, 3 reps x 2; 22.5kg, 5 reps

Glute & ham raises, pullthroughs (superset): 10 reps x 3 each

Situps, 5kg plate: 10 reps x 3

Lots of foam rolling

Ah, trust conditioning class to bring me back down to earth! I ought to stop saying I’m a powerlifter at my secondary gym, because then I go into classes like that and look like an utter wimp. Remember, self: being good at deadlifting makes you good at deadlifting, not anything else.

Still, at least I’m getting faster on the sprints – even if I still always come last!

I did some new things today, too – woodchoppers with a 14lb hammer (I was rubbish at these, need to learn the technique) and flipping a weighted, jointed “body bag” up & down the dojo – plus the usual subjects of kroc rows, kicks, kettlebell jerks etc etc.

My back is quite cross at me now.

Daaaayuum, one good session!

Deadlifts off 2” blocks: 40kg, 5 reps x 2; 60kg, 5 reps; 70kg, 2 reps; 90kg, 2 reps; 107.5kg, 2 reps x 2; 115kg, 1 rep; 120kg, 1 rep

Squats: 20kg, 5 reps x 2; 40kg, 5 reps; 50kg, 3 reps; 62.5kg, 5 reps x 2

Hyperextension: 10 reps x 3

Narrow-grip bench press: 20kg, 5 reps x 2; 30kg, 5 reps; 35kg, 3 reps; 40kg, 3 reps x 3

Incline dumbbell bench press: 10.5kg, 5 reps; 12.5kg, 5 reps x 2

Strongman training is about true functional strength. Strongman is about getting you strong to a degree that you never thought possible. Here are 33 reasons you need to start doing it.

Starting Tuesday 7/2 we will be offering free strongman workouts written by coach Chet…

The more I consider Strongman, the more I want to steer my training towards it. My coach specializes in it and I just freaking love training it.

I’m sort-of considering adding some strongman stuff in 2014, once I’ve got the GBPF British out of the way. Need to find somewhere that has the equipment, though! 33 Reasons to Train Strongman

I normally can eat anything & everything but…

…over the last few days I have had what can only be described as an unhappy tummy, and I’m not sure what’s causing it. I really really badly do not want to be someone who can’t tolerate certain foodstuffs. I’m not even sure what the symptoms of not tolerating wheat/dairy/whatever are, so I don’t know if I have that, or if it’s something else.

On top of that, I’m a bit heavier than I’d like, especially so close to a competition (2 weeks on Saturday).

Additionally, we’ve been having tons of treats at work recently; on Tuesday I had a cupcake, yesterday it was rocky road mini bites, and today someone’s put a box of mini millionaire shortbread on my desk. Nooooooo!

Oh dear. Not sure how to resolve my sore tummy issues. I’d say “oh I’ll just stick to foods I know I can tolerate”, but to be frank I can tolerate everything (at least normally). What to do?
